Your local library is a smorgasbord of books, ideas and activities guaranteed to stir a writer’s imagination. We’ve have already discussed the importance of being a reader and a learner; the library provides reading and learning at every turn.
Let’s talk about my local library; libraries of course differ from city to city but they all have some things in common.
- (1) High speed computers-living in rural Alabama leaves me with dial up; please don’t laugh. Going to the library gives me a chance to get some speedy work done in a quiet atmosphere, a must for any writer.
- (2) A variety of books and magazines-No matter what I need information on, I can find it at the library. Yes, I know I can look on the internet but I enjoy browsing through books.
- (3) Reference books-our library has a whole section of reference books; dictionaries, encyclopedias, local reference, whatever I need.
- (4) Information on community education and other events-the front desk is always an up-to-date source of “what’s happening?” in our community; many events that could be helpful to getting a career start as a writer.
Something very important to me is community involvement; I want to support my community and all that entails. The library has so many helpful programs:
- books by mail for senior citizens and the disabled
- Readers advice to help me find books similar to my favorites
- Children’s program with free books up to age 5
- Wireless internet access
- Free DVD/video tape rental
This only covers a few of the events of the library. My children loved to go to the once a week reading event at the library and would get involved in the summer reading program. With constant improvements even in a struggling economy the library is a family-friendly, cost effective way to spend a fun filled afternoon.
Growing up I looked forward to the bookmobile and to trips to our library and of course use of the library at school. I don’t believe I would have chosen to pursue a career in writing if not for the early exposure I received as a child to books.
